Our Story
A chair factory in Semarang, since 2012.
Far East Seating was founded in 2012 by David Smith. By then David had spent decades in the furniture business, twenty years of it focused on seating and working with American furniture companies. He kept running into the same gap: plenty of factories made furniture, but almost none specialised in chairs.
His question was simple: "Why is there no one focused solely on seating, with high quality and affordable pricing?" Far East Seating was his answer.
Today we make chairs and upholstered seating for furniture brands, hotels and homeowners, mostly in the US and the Middle East. Clients send us whatever they have: a sketch, a photo, a CAD file, or a chair they want copied or improved. We turn it into a sample, and once the sample is approved, into a production run.
Indoor dining is what we make most: side chairs, armchairs, bar and counter stools. We also build lounge and accent chairs, benches, ottomans and headboards for hotel guest rooms and public areas. We also make outdoor seating for selected projects, using Sunbrella fabrics, quick-dry foam and outdoor-grade rope. For large outdoor programs, we bring in trusted partner factories nearby.
More than 300 people work at our factory in Trimulyo, Genuk. Packing and container stuffing are handled at our own warehouse a few streets away.
Milestones
How we got here.
Founded in Semarang
David Smith and a partner set up Far East Seating with one goal: a factory that does nothing but seating.
A new plant in Terboyo
Export orders kept growing, so we opened a new production plant in the Terboyo Industrial Estate, Semarang.
New ownership, same focus
David took full ownership of the company. Riska joined as General Manager and runs day-to-day operations.
Craftsmanship
Machines for accuracy. Hands for the rest.
Frame parts are cut and shaped on Weinig and Bacci CNC equipment, including a Bacci multi-axis machining center. Frames are then assembled in heavy-duty clamps and jigs, so the hundredth chair in an order matches the first.
Covers are sewn on Japanese machines, and every upholstered piece is checked against a pattern for shape and feel. For finishing we use Akzo Nobel NC, vinyl and butyrate systems, or PU where the piece calls for it.
Our Expertise
Made for export, with the paperwork to match.
A large share of what we make ships to the US, so American compliance is part of the job: TB-117 foam and fillings, CPSIA finish chemicals, TSCA Title VI (CARB) for composite wood, and law labels for the US and Canada. Our timber is plantation-grown (mahogany, rubberwood, beech, oak) and sourced under Indonesia's SVLK timber legality system.
We keep more than 50 imported fabrics in stock, mostly from US mills such as Kaufmann, Valdese and Swavelle, and we can bring in any fabric a client specifies.
Our Direction
Vision & Mission
What we are aiming for, and how we work day to day.
Our Vision
To be the seating factory that designers and hotel groups call first when a chair has to be right, because they know the production run will match the sample they signed off.
Our Mission
Build every order to the approved sample. Give clients a real lead time at the start, and tell them early if something changes. Keep investing in our people and our machines, so consistent quality never depends on luck.
What We Stand For
How we work.
01 · Quality
The sample is the standard
Once a client approves a prototype, it becomes the reference for every unit in the order. Each piece is checked against it before it is packed.
02 · Craftsmanship
Work that still needs hands
CNC machines handle the cutting and shaping. Sewing, padding and upholstery are still done by hand, and that is where most of our people work.
03 · Partnership
Straight answers
If a design will not hold up in daily use, or a fabric is wrong for the application, we say so before production starts, not after the container ships.
